Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car is one of the most famous attractions in Brazil, and there're many different ways to climb this incredible mountain, some are easy, others aren’t. There's no hike to the top. But even an inexperienced climber, with our guides and the appropriate equipment can reach it by the easiest route, called Costão. If that’s your case, please read “Sugar Loaf for beginners” below. If you are an experienced climber and need a guide or instructor, please read “Sugar Loaf for climbers” below. There are routes of all levels.
Sugar Loaf for begginers
Costão is the name of the easiest route on Sugar Loaf and one of the most incredible hikes/climbs in the city. To climb Costão previous experience in the mountains is not necessary, but you will need a lot of energy for the long hike up hill.
The hike/climb is done on trails and on the rock face. There is only one short part where climbing gear is needed. At this point a rope, a harness and carabiners will be used. Our guides will help you get there! It takes you four hours to go up and come down (the descent is by cable car). An unforgettable hike with sights only available for lovers of adventure. Take a look at the photos! We offer individual or group tours.
Climbing is possible all year round, but in the afternoons the wall is in the shade, so it’s not so hot.

Sugar Loaf for climbers
The Sugar Loaf is a fantastic mountain, hugh, with good quality granite. Many of its routes are among the most classic routes in Rio de Janeiro, like the Italian Route (5.10 / 6a+), Coringa (5.9 / 5+), Bohemia Gelada (5.8 / 4), Stop chimney (5.9 / 5+), Secundo (5.11a / 6c) and Lagartão (5.11a / 6c).
If you wanna climb 5.10 (6a+) our suggestion is the Italian Route. With pitch after pitch of amazing climbing in a spectacular location, this is one of the most beautiful routes in the city. The first two pitches are impressive due to the verticality, good rock and aesthetic moves. It's a sustained 5.10 (6a+) for 80 meters. These pitches involve face climbing.
After the crux pitches, there are two possible link-ups to the climb. Straight up to the summit by a via ferrata or traversing left for 50 meters to join the last three pitches of Secundo route. This last option takes longer. The Italian route-Secundo link up is 260 meters long, but it’s more beautiful. Here you can see a video of the Italian Route-Secundo link-up and here some photos.
It takes around six hours to hike to the base, climb, enjoy the summit and come down (partially by cable car, partially on a forest trail).
If you'd like an easier way to reach the top of the Sugar Loaf we suggest Coringa route (5.9 / 5+) and Bohemia Gelada route (5.8, 4). Coringa is the best 5.9 (5+) on Sugar Loaf, which makes the route extremely popular. It is 100 meters long, with three pitches, one of them almost vertical. The route is well-protected with many rest spots. It's located in an awesome area, between vertical walls, the forest and the sea (photos here). After you climb Coringa, it is possible to hike and climb (5.8/ 4) to the top of Sugar Loaf by the normal route, which overlooks Praia Vermelha and Copacabana.
It takes between 4 and 5 hours, the same for Bohemia. Despite being easier, Bohemia has a longer approach and is longer than Coringa. Bohemia is on the east face, Sugar Loaf’s least step face, so it doesn’t have vertical sections. But it doesn't mean it isn't interesting. The route is beautiful, and it overlooks Niterói's beaches, the Guanabara Bay, Praia Vermelha and Copacabana.
We provide all gear, but if you prefer, just bring your climbing shoes and harness.
