In Tijuca National Park there are some huge beautiful mountains. Pico da Tijuca, Agulhinha da Gávea and Pedra da Gávea are among the most interesting.
Agulhinha da Gávea is located between the Forest and the sea. Both forest and sea views are fantastic. Agulhinha da Gávea has about nine routes. The routes involve mostly face climbing, with some low-angle slabby moves, some liebacks and chimneys, depending on the route. The grades vary from 5.8 (4) to 5.11 (6c).
The longest ones have from four to five pitches and it is possible to climb and return from the summit in four hours. The most popular routes are: Jorge de Castro (5.8 / 4), Zaib (5.10 / 6b), 15 de Novembro (5.8 / 4) and Olimpo (5.9 / 5).
Agulhinha is possibly the best choice if you are climbing for the first time in the National Park. The aproach is easy and short, and the routes are not so long. While on Pedra da Gavea you need a full day, you can climb Agulhinha in half a day, morning or afternoon.
The most famous route at Pedra da Gávea is Passagem dos Olhos (Eyes Traverse). A not so dificult route (5.9 / 5) but impressive, for its height and for being pratically all horizontal. It takes an hour and a half to get to the base, three to four hours to climb the route and another hour and a half to hike down from the summit, so it takes a full day. Pedra da Gávea is about 850 meters above sea level.
Pico da Tijuca has a beautiful north face with many good routes, some of them five pitches long. At the end of the routes, after a short hike, you arrive at the highest peak of the Tijuca National Park (1.021m).
Most of the routes are 200 meters long, many with low-angle friction moves, but some vertical sections also. The easiest ones are 5.9 and 5.10 (5+ and 6a/b). To approach the routes, climb, and hike down from the summit, it takes about 6 hours. The classic routes are P3 (5.10 / 6a), Vereda Tropical (5.9 / 5+ A1) and Magia Vertical (5.11a / 6c). The rock has good friction and is solid. The routes are on the north face so it´s better to start early. We provide all the necessary gear, but if you prefer just bring your climbing shoes and harness.
