Morro da Babilônia (Babilonia Hill), has the most popular routes in Rio de Janeiro due to the easy access and the easy to medium grades.
Altogether, there are 35 routes with grades ranging from 5.6 (3) to 5.10d (6b+), located on the north face of Morro do Babilônia. Most of the routes involve face technical climbing, some with good holds, others with small ones.
The wall is 150 meters long and the longest lines reach 200 meters, with an average of four pitches. Since it has very little vegetation, it only takes a few hours for it to be climbable after it rains. For all these reasons it is considered a great climbing school.
Among the most popular routes are: Ricardo Prado, Salomith, M2, Roda Viva, IV Centenário and Luiz Arnaud. In three hours it is possible to finish a route and rappel. From the wall, the view of Praia Vermelha and the Sugar Loaf is incredible!
Babilonia is a good choice if you are climbing for the first time in Rio or if you don't have much time to spend climbing and want a short approach.
Morro da Urca (Urca Hill) has all the qualities of a training area: easy access, low grades, little exposure, and mostly short routes. Perfect for beginners. There are more than 50 routes, mostly with holds and friction sections, all bolted.
Climbing is possible on the south and north faces. On the south face is the famous Paredão dos Coloridos (Colored Wall), low-angle routes named after colors, generally two or three pitches long and graded between 5.6 (3) and 5.8 (4).
On the north face most of the 21 routes are short (up to 60 meters) and with difficulty level between 5.6 (3) and 5.11b (6c+). You can choose between two-pitch easy routes and top roping something more challenging, like 5.10 and 5.11 (6a and 6c) routes.
To get there it is necessary to hike uphill for about half an hour, but it’s a beautiful trail in the forest. From the wall you have a nice view of the city, over 200 meters above sea level.
